Attendance
Attendance Matters at AJUSD
Daily attendance is crucial for student success, contributing directly to the development of skills, peer relationships, and self-confidence. Below, you will find important information regarding our attendance process and the dedicated support we will provide to your family.
- Parents/legal guardians must contact the Main Office at their student's school within 24hrs of their child's absence. Voicemail is available to leave a message regarding absences if calling after office hours or no answer.
- Please leave your name, child's name, date, reason for absence, and their teacher's name.
- Absences may also be entered through ParentVUE.
FAQs
-
Parents/guardians are required to follow these steps regarding student absences:
-
Notify the school on the day the absence occurs.
-
Submit documentation (a written note from the parent/guardian or appropriate professional documentation, like a physician's note) within 2 days of the student's return.
Why this matters: Submitting documentation promptly is essential for maintaining accurate attendance records and helping us provide appropriate academic support.
-
-
Excused absences, as defined by district policy, include the following instances. Please note that appropriate documentation is required for all excused absences.
-
Student Illness/Medical: Personal illness or medical/dental appointments, provided a physician's note is submitted.
-
Family Emergency: Serious illness or death within the immediate family.
-
Religious Observance: Recognized religious holidays or observances.
-
Legal Obligations: Mandatory court appearances or other legal requirements.
-
Pre-Approved Circumstances: Other circumstances approved in advance by the school principal.
-
-
Any absence is automatically designated as unexcused if the mandatory supporting documentation (e.g., a written note or physician's form) is not provided.
This category commonly includes:
- Absences taken for family vacations during school instructional time.
- Attendance at non-school-related activities or events.
- Any absence where the school has not received written communication from the parent/guardian.
-
AJUSD is committed to partnering with families to proactively identify and address barriers to consistent attendance. We understand that challenges arise, and we have a variety of supports available.
Depending on the individual situation, our support services may include:
-
Counseling Services: Access to social-emotional guidance and support.
-
Transportation Assistance: Help coordinating travel to and from school.
-
Community Referrals: Connections to local agencies and essential resources.
-
Targeted Interventions: Other resources specifically designed to promote regular school attendance.
-
-
AJUSD is mandated to follow state guidelines regarding chronic absenteeism. If a student's absences continue after multiple, documented levels of school and district support have been provided, AJUSD may be required to involve external agencies, such as the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) or the court system.
Please note: This action is strictly a last resort. We prioritize collaborative solutions, and every effort will be made to support your family in improving attendance before this step is necessary.
-
One Note for Continuous Illness: You only need to submit a single written note from the parent or guardian to cover all consecutive days a student is absent for the same illness (e.g., the flu or COVID). Separate notes for each day are not required.
