Reimagining Learning

Reimagining Learning in AJUSD

A New Approach Across Our Schools

Something new is taking shape across AJUSD. Not in just one classroom. Not at just one school. At Peralta Trail Elementary, Cactus Canyon Junior High, and Apache Junction High School, we are rethinking how students experience learning.

Because students don’t stop loving to learn. They stop loving how school feels. We are changing that

What Is Transformational Learning?

Transformational learning is not a single program. It is a shift happening across AJUSD, designed to better align schools with the world students are entering.

This means less focus on passive content delivery and more focus on problem-solving, adaptability, and real-world application. It includes greater flexibility in how students learn and demonstrate mastery, along with stronger connections between subjects, skills, and purpose.

This is not about lowering expectations. It is about making learning more meaningful and more effective.

How It Looks at Each Level

  • Peralta Trail Elementary

At Peralta Trail Elementary, students in grades 3 through 5 experience a balance of core academic instruction and hands-on Innovation Studios. Students have opportunities for choice in their learning, collaborate with peers, and apply their learning in real-world contexts. The experience culminates in a fifth grade capstone project.
  • Cactus Canyon Junior High

At Cactus Canyon Junior High, the 6th Grade Reimagined model focuses on supporting students through the transition to junior high. Students learn through a team-based approach across core subjects, receive support in organization and responsibility, and build strong literacy skills across all content areas. Students track their growth through portfolios and complete a capstone passion project.
  • Apache Junction High School

At Apache Junction High School, the A3-U model creates a connected and purposeful learning experience. Students participate in aligned instruction across subjects, engage in real-world application through engineering and systems thinking, and use structured time for planning, reflection, and presentation. Leadership development and accountability are built into the experience.
